Louisiana State Police say at least seven people are dead in a series of traffic accidents on I-55 on Monday morning.

At a press conference, police said the number of deaths may increase as 158 wrecked vehicles are cleared.

Troopers were still removing vehicles from the interstate Tuesday morning.

Nearly three dozen people were hurt in the wrecks both north and southbound between Ruddock and Manchac.

The collisions are being blamed on a hazy mix of fog and smoke from marsh fires dubbed "super fog".

Three 18-wheelers were involved, and at least two were fully engulfed in flames.

The bridge over Lake Maurepas remained closed on Tuesday.

State Police said after final vehicle removal, a surface cleanup would follow and then the Department of Transportation and Development would begin its damage assessment.
