Gov. John Bel Edwards is asking Louisiana residents to call off the barbecues and cookouts this holiday weekend.

The governor said any activity involving an open flame is a bad idea while the state is under a burn ban, and urged residents not to create more work for firefighters.

The request comes as crews work to control wildfires across the state that have burned more than 60,000 acres.

State Fire Marshal Daniel Wallis said Louisianans should consider going to a local business instead of barbecuing outdoors.
