Residents near a Marathon Petroleum refinery fire in Louisiana have been ordered to evacuate

The flames and smoke can be seen for miles outside the refinery Garyville in the New Orleans area.

The company says the fire and leak are contained within the refinery's property and no one has been injured.

Marathon says it's requiring people living within a one mile radius of the fire to temporarily evacuate as a precaution.

As of Friday afternoon, St. John The Baptist Parish has opened shelters at East St. John Preparatory Academy Gym, 400 Ory Drive., LaPlace, and West St. John High School at 480 Hwy. 3127 in Edgard.\

Transportation is available if needed by calling 985-652-2222 or 985-652-6338. Residents are asked to bring medications and any other items they need to the shelter.
