New documents released to the public this week have some people raising eyebrows at the amount of money Mayor LaToya Cantrell spent on a recent trip to Switzerland.

Cantrell spent nearly $10,000 on airfare alone, according to those records.

The mayor and three city employees were on the trip, but the $10,000 for flights was only for Cantrell - it's unclear how much the cost to fly the other employees was.

The trip overseas was taxpayer funded in an effort to shore up a sister-city agreement.

FOX 8 reports that Cantrell has plans for another overseas trip, traveling to Singapore for a week to attend the World Cities Summit that begins this weekend.

“This is really not the time to be going out of the country to Singapore or other long-distance trips when the city council is considering a reduction to your travel budget,” Dillard University political analyst Robert Collins told FOX 8. “It sort of gives your critics more ammunition to work with. So the mayor is really not helping her case.”

Cantrell has defended the trips as culturally and economically important for the city.
