A state legislator wants to increase the fines for drivers who speed on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge on I-10.

Right now a first offense on any highway in Louisiana is a maximum fine of $175, 30 days in jail, or both. A subsequent offense is up to $500, 90 days, or both.

Senate President Page Cortez, a Lafayette Republican, is proposing a bill to increase the fines by five-times for speeders on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

There have been more than 200 accidents a year on the bridge in recent times, resulting in several fatalities.
