U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Louisiana Abortion Law

The Supreme Court is striking down a strict Louisiana abortion law in a 5-4 decision that is a huge win for advocates of abortion rights and a bitter loss for pro-life activists.

Chief Justice John Roberts voted with the four Democratic appointees to the Supreme Court.

The law placed strict restrictions on doctors who offer abortion services in Louisiana. Critics argued that the law could have forced all but one of the state's abortion providers to shut down operations.

It was similar to a Texas law that the high court struck down in 2016.

Abortion in the U.S. has been legal since the Supreme Court's landmark Roe versus Wade decision in 1973.
