Methane Gas Blamed As Cause Of Explosion In French Quarter

The city's Director of Public Safety says methane gas trapped in a sewer is most likely the cause of yesterday's explosion in the French Quarter.

Colonel Terry Ebbert said Monday morning's explosion near Dauphine and Toulouse streets sent four manhole covers into the air and spread to two vehicles, which caught on fire.

No injuries were reported but the incident broke out windows at several properties and caused a brief evacuation.
