Before Southeastern hosted 16th-ranked LSU Wednesday, Lions coach Matt Riser told FOX 8, "It's not really hanging with them, it's beating them. We've got to finish some games off." His team responded by jumping out to a 5-0 lead and holding on for a 5-4 lead over their in-state rivals.

Drew Avans opened the game up in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run and the Tigers were held scoreless until they got on the board in the seventh, followed by a Jake Slaughter three-run home run in the eighth to cut the deficit to one. The ninth inning brought plenty of drama as the bases were loaded before Bryce Tassin forced a double play to end the game.

SLU improves to 6-3 while LSU drops to 5-4. They will meet again on Sunday in Baton Rouge as part of a round robin weekend that also includes Toledo and Sacred Heart.
