A large contingent of state troopers will be in New Orleans as carnival season in the city heads toward a climactic end on Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday.

Louisiana State Police officials say approximately 165 troopers have been given temporary assignments to work with New Orleans police, the FBI and other law enforcement personnel in an effort to keep the throngs of people safe at parades and in the French Quarter.

The troopers will take part in proactive patrols, criminal investigations, and controlling crowds and traffic.
