Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies are keeping an eye out for unbelted drivers and passengers of pick up trucks over the next week.
Through next Thursday, they'll participate in a campaign called "Buckle Up in Your Truck."
Pick up trucks comprise of 25% of the vehicle fleet in the state of Louisiana and surveys and fatality data show that pick up truck drivers and passengers fall well behind occupants of other kinds of passenger vehicles when it comes to wearing seat belts.
The trucks also are two times more likely to roll over than a car in fatal crashes.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission is conducting a "high visibility enforcement and awareness campaign" to encourage seat belt use and reduce fatalities.
