Slain EBR Deputy Was Nearly 18 Year Veteran of Dept.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff''s officer who was fatally shot late Saturday night at a hair salon off O'Neal Lane was 43-year-old Sgt. Shawn Anderson who joined the department in May of 1999.

Sgt. Anderson was fatally wounded around 11 p.m. Saturday as he and another deputy were investigating a rape.

It wasn't immediately clear what led to a struggle with a suspect who was shot.

Anderson died after being rushed to Oschner Hospital.  He is survived by a wife and a son and daughter.

The name of the suspect has not been released nor was their any word on the extent of his injuries.

The investigation is being conducted by Louisiana State Police.

The Mayor-President of East Baton Rouge Parish, Sharon Weston Broome, has ordered flags in the parish flown at half-staff.  Broome termed the death of Sgt. Anderson a "loss for the entire community."
